Artwork Hanging Mistakes

  • Comparison chart showing a bed against a pink wall with two windows labeled 'Problem' and a similar bed against a white wall labeled 'Solution'.

    Too Far

Each grouping shouldn’t be more than 3 - 6” inches apart.

  • Comparison of a problem and solution chart with a thermostat on each side.

    Too Small

Artwork should take up 60 - 75% of the wall space that isn’t covered by furniture or molding etc. Artwork that is too small can make less of an impact, be overlooked, and can take away from the interior design.

  • Comparison of two living room setups: the problem side shows a peach wall with a framed picture and a black sofa, while the solution side shows a white wall with a framed picture and a black sofa.

    Too High

Artwork should be hung 8” - 10” above a furniture piece and should take up 65 - 85% of the width of the furniture.

If there is no furniture to anchor your artwork to then it should be eye level (middle of the photograph should be 57” off the floor). This may fluctuate depending on high.
